The world is filled with terrifying critters that can put humans in harm’s way, and while all these creatures have weird Latin scientific names, many also have nicknames that make these offending pests and parasites sound even creepier — like the kissing bug.
What makes this even more disturbing is that these bugs are becoming infamous for a potential kiss of death… and they could be nesting near you.
They look harmless enough, but their name comes from their proclivity for… biting people’s lips and faces while they sleep, and feeding on their blood. They’re also known by the more appropriate name, Assassin Bugs.
Those bites can transfer a parasite that causes chagas disease, an affliction that can lead to serious health problems.
The disease is hard to detect and starts off like a low-grade flu, but then changes to heart issues and gastrointestinal distress.
People across the United States are running into these bugs, which normally favor more tropical climates but have now invaded over 25 states.
The CDC has no approved treatment for chagas, only some experimental ones that are at best 85% effective when you catch it early. It can be fatal if left untreated, which is why it’s important to watch out for these bugs.
